What is your approach to pet training?
I use the most up-to-date, science-based, positive reinforcement training. We use food while training as it is the most powerful motivating reinforcement and we can do multiple repetitions quickly using food. I also use play and praise; whatever is the most reinforcing for your dog.
What if my dog isn't food motivated?
Every dog has to eat. So, they are food motivated. It is about finding the right food for them. There is always a reason why our dogs aren't eating whether that is because they don't like the food, they are full, they are too overstimulated, or are shut down in their environment. I will help you find what is reinforcing to your dog!
I am a firm believer in not overfeeding your dog and using their meals for training. We will need to use treats for certain situations or other types of food so in these cases, I recommend feeding less during actual meal times if kibble isn't work for us and we need to raise the value of the reinforcement.
Do I have to use treats forever?
I love to answer this question by asking you a question. If your job told you they weren't going to pay you anymore, would you continue working there or find a new job? Chances are, you are reading this and saying "Whitney, I would immediately walk out of that room and tell my boss 'bye'!" Our dogs are the same way. They do need reinforcement from something and why not give them that kibble, cookie, or toy? Our dogs do what is reinforcing to them. If they realize that it just isn't worth it to them, then they will definitely not continue practicing that behavior. They have to be reinforced with something. Now, I am not saying it isn't possible or that you have to treat them every single time, because my goal is to be able to build such a high reinforcement history for behaviors that our dog's LOVE to rehearse those behaviors for us,, but the occasional reinforcement is still needed to keep that reinforcement history up :) .
